In Michigan on Tuesday, November 30 at 1:30 pm, there was a school shooting at Oxford High school. Four students were killed and eight injured, including one teacher. The shooter was 15 year old Ethan Crumbley. He is a sophomore at OHS. The weapon was a .9 millimeter Sig Sauer, Semi-automatic.  Crumbley is currently being held at Oakland County Jail. The forensic investigation lasted from the time police showed up at the shooting till 5:30am the next morning.

Ethan Crumbley is being charged as an adult in Oakland county on the charges of 4 murders in the first degree, and domestic terrorism. The shooting was pre-planned by Ethan. The day before the shooting he changed his Instagram bio to, “Black Death.” Saying now I have become death, the destroyer of worlds. See you tomorrow, Oxford.” Students found this message after the shooting occurred. Since then, the account has been removed from the social media platform.  In a video, a student from Oxford posted on TikTok. It shows Crumbley trying to open the door to a classroom while imitating police officers. The student in the particular video escaped through a window.

According to the New York Times, there have been 28 school shootings in K-12 schools in the U.S. in the past year. The number continues to grow. There have been other students in surrounding states who have stepped up and led groups to protest against school shootings. Statistics show more students have thought about killing themselves this year, more so than any other year in the past. Teenagers being depressed leads them to make decisions without thinking. These decisions are sometimes the causes of the terrorism and slaughter in the country.

A controversial topic that has broke out since the Oxford Shooting case is-should Crumbley’s parents be prosecuted? His parents, James and Jennifer were charged with involuntary manslaughter. The evidence gathered against them includes; failure to lock a firearm out of the reach of a minor, failure to report their son’s statements about shooting the school to law enforcement, and child neglect. If they are convicted, both will go to prison. After the Crumbley’s parents’ court hearing, they left town and were found and brought back. They plead guilty in Oakland county.

This horrific event has resulted in the Tiktok trend known as “National School Shooting day, including elementary’s.” It was to take place December 17th. There were 9 school shootings in the United States according to the Center for Homeland Defense and Security. The Oxford School Shooting has been very traumatic for students in the U.S. Many parents in Michigan and surrounding states have kept their children home since the shooting. Law enforcement has been working closely with school districts to keep our children safe.
