Sonic the Hedgehog has been around for some time. From a gaming franchise to the big screen, the blue hedgehog has had a fair share of good and bad reputation. But in reality, this is one of the most popular video game series of all time alongside his longtime rival, Mario.

With Nintendo and its Super Mario Bros. series growing more popular after the release of Super Mario World on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1990, a new contender emerged in the next year, and the name was Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic the Hedgehog was a platformer released on the SEGA Genesis. It was a blue hedgehog named Sonic going on an adventure to take on Dr. Robotnik and his inventions and also capture the Chaos Emeralds.

The game was a huge success and became very popular very quickly. It has about 1.14 billion units sold as of 2020, with 1.1 million copies sold in 1991. And with the success of the first installment, SEGA released Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in the next year. This time the game introduced Miles “Tails” Prower, a two-tailed fox that is a sidekick of Sonic. And throughout the 2D era of Sonic multiple games followed, with Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic CD and other spinoff games in the 1990s.

In 1993, two TV shows were released. These shows were called Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic the Hedgehog was broadcasted on the ABC network while Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog was broadcasted in different independent networks. There were more shows like Sonic Underground in 1999 which wasn’t well received, Sonic X in 2003, and Sonic Boom in 2014.

In 1998 was the first release of a Sonic 3D game, known as Sonic Adventure. Sonic Adventure was very well received by the media and that is the 2nd most popular Sonic game which led to a sequel, Sonic Adventure 2 that is the most popular Sonic game with the debut of the character Shadow the Hedgehog, who is the main character of the game Shadow the Hedgehog. And also Sonic Heroes, which is the 7th most popular Sonic game. But then was the release of Sonic ‘06. Sonic ‘06 is one of the most negatively reviewed games of the Sonic the Hedgehog Franchise.

After the release of Sonic ‘06 more games were released like Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Lost World, Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations that had positive reviews. Although some of the games released were pretty well received, there were some poorly received like Sonic Forces, Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. But the franchise is still coming out with more products and with the release of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie in 2020 and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie in 2022. With games also coming out in 2022 is Sonic Origins, a game where it showcases off the classic Sonic games consisting of Sonic 1, 2, 3&K, and CD and with the release of the remastered version of Sonic Colors, known as Sonic Colors: Ultimate in 2021].
