Cultural Evolution of Music

From music that mimics the sound of nature to music that we have today, the sound of music has been changing along with society all this time. Think of listening to a song from before you were born and what time it came from, it’s different from what you listen to now.

Back to the Baroque period.(1600-1750) The Baroque period is characterized by strict musical forms and highly ornamental works. Baroque music began in Europe around 1600. It continued until 1750.

The Baroque period saw an explosion of new musical styles with the introduction of the concerto, the sonata and the opera.

The Baroque-Classical Transition c. 1730–1760. At first the new style took over baroque forms but then was composed with simpler parts, more notated ornamentation and more emphatic division into sections. In the classical period, the harmonic functions were simpler.

The tendency to emphasize the melody and bass lines was the reason for the classical period. (1750-1830) Also, many of the forms and ensembles developed during the Baroque were adopted and developed and expanded in the Classical and later periods. The tendency to emphasize the melody and bass lines was the reason for the classical period.

The Romantic Period. (1830-1900) Romantic music was sought to show emotion, both negative and positive, through music. Orchestras became much larger during this period. compositions became increasingly expressive and inventive. Expansive symphonies, virtuosic piano music, dramatic operas, and passionate songs took inspiration from art and literature. The Romantic era is known for its intense energy and passion.

There were a whole lot of different music types going on from 1899-1974. From Maple Time Rag to Punk Rock.

Maple Time Rag is a multi-strain ragtime march with athletic bass lines and offbeat melodies.

In between the lines of 1899 and 1974 is  music like the blues, the beginning of R&B, Jazz, Rock, Folk, and Rap. All of those different types of music seem to be like different parts of the country. Around that time there were people moving west during the westward expansion, people started to move around and go different places. That seems about the reason why these different types of music are more popular in different parts of the U.S.

From 1974 and on these types of music were carried on. It only changes more than her, cultural evolution of music is still going to change.
