State of the Union 2020

The State of the Union took place on February 4th, 2020.  It took place in the United States capital, Washington D.C. The main purpose of the State of the Union is for the President of the United States to give a speech to Congress every year about the achievements and plans of the government.

This State of the Union was rather different. Nancy Pelosi is the speaker of the United States House of Representatives and has spent the last few months laying out a case for Trump’s impeachment. As President Trump entered, he avoided all contact with Pelosi.

Towards the end of Trump’s speech, Nancy Pelosi ripped the president’s speech up four times in an expression of anger behind Trump’s back while he was taking his metaphorical victory lap. According to CNNPolitics, when asked why she ripped up the president’s speech, she stated, “He shredded the truth, so I shredded his speech.”

Trump did, in fact, stretch the truth in some areas but was completely correct in other areas. An example of a stretched truth would be how Trump touted how the strong economy has lifted people out of poverty. While somewhat true, he exaggerated. Trump did have a few things he did not exaggerate. Millions of new jobs have been created since he was in office, and the unemployment rates for African Americans, Hispanics, and Asians are at the lowest point in our country’s history according to The Hill.
